What is OPT?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of work experience that a F1 student can generally gather through a temporary employment. The employment or the work is often related to the subjects of study or the academic program of the students. As per the rule, a student can receive a maximum 12 months of hands on-practical experience for each degree level. Students who graduate with a qualified degree, and are currently in an approved post-completion OPT period based on a designated STEM degree may apply for a 17-month STEM extension of their post-completion OPT.

Eligibility for OPT

You may apply for the OPT employment option if you meet the following criteria:
  • You must be in legal F-1 status for one full academic year and be in good academic standing

  • Student must not have worked full time for 12 Months or more on CPT

  • You must be enrolled in your last semester of classes required to earn an associate degree.

  • A student is not required to have a job offer to apply.

  • Employment must be directly related to your field of study.

  • You must complete an associate degree.

There are two types of OPT

  • Pre-completion OPT: This is a type of OPT where people currently pursuing degree programs acquire work authorization to do work related to their field of study. The work may be part-time during academic quarters and full-time during vacations.

  • Post-completion OPT: This is a type of OPT for people who have completed their degree requirements, and requires working at least 20 hours/week to count as OPT employment and are not simultaneously enrolled as students.

CPT

Curricular Practical Training is NOT intended as a way to begin a job before OPT is approved. It is your responsibility to reasonably expect that you will have permission to work by the time you are to begin employment. If you have completed your courses and the necessary research for your thesis or dissertation, you are not eligible for CPT.

To apply for CPT

  • F-1 students must be enrolled for one full academic year

  • Job offer must be in your area of study

  • A request for authorization for circular Practical Training must be made to the DSO

Impact of CPT on OPT

  • CPT requires enrollment in an internship class in which on-the-job training is required and for which course credit is received. Student must be enrolled in the internship class at the same time they are working.OPT does not require you to enroll in an internship class.

  • CPT may only be issued for work before graduation.OPT allows for employment both before and after graduation.

  • CPT requires a job offer.OPT does not require a job offer.

  • CPT is authorized by OIP within 5 business days.OPT is authorized by USCIS in 60 - 90 days .

  • CPT usually does not affect OPT as long as CPT is authorized for less than 12 months of full-time employment . Part-time CPT is never deducted from OPT.

  • CPT is authorized for a specific employer for work related to student’s major field of study.OPT allows work with ANY employer based on the student’s major field of study.

  • CPT work permit is granted on the I-20.OPT work permit is called the EAD (Employment Authorization Document).

  • CPT is issued by the I-Center within 5-10 working days .OPT is issued by the USCIS within 90 days(after preliminary processing by I-Center).

  • CPT is authorized for a specific employer for work related to student’s field of studies.OPT allows work w/ ANY employer based on student’s field of studies.

  • CPT requires enrollment in a special class in which on-the-job training is required and for which course credit is received during the quarter the employment takes place .OPT does not require you to enroll in any class.
